Basic Garden Fencing Ideas

Most gardeners will tell you that there’s nothing better than watching their gardens grow voluptuous and abundant. But they’ll also tell you that there’s nothing worse than finding out that some critter has dug up their plants, leaving a hole and some chewed up leaves in its place. This can be a true nightmare for any gardener.

Here are some simple garden fencing ideas to help keep unwanted intruders from terrorizing your treasured plants.

Wire Fences

This type of fencing is very effective in keeping dogs and cats from digging inside your flower bed or vegetable garden. If the fence is at least six feet tall it will also keep deer out. An additional benefit is that the fence is see-through, so you will not obstruct the view of your garden from the house or patio–an issue with some of the solid types of fences. To keep burrowing animals like groundhogs, gophers and rats out make sure to bury the bottom of the fence one to two feet underground.

Iron Fences

An iron garden fence is more expensive, but will last virtually forever. This decorative garden fencing also adds an element of Victorian style to your backyard. Many pests will be deterred from going through an iron fence, but because this type of fence is not solid, smaller animals–like mice and voles–will still be able to fit between the bars.

Aluminum Fences

Aluminum garden fencing comes in a number of styles and looks similar to fences made of iron. Their biggest advantage: this type of fence does not rust. They are also more affordable than wrought iron fences. The iron fence, however, is likely to last quite a bit longer than aluminum.

Picket Fences

Contrary to popular belief picket fences are not just for looks. Because the vertical panels are so close together, picket fences do a good job of keeping pests from entering your garden. The biggest downside is that you will not be able to see into your garden from a distance, but if this is not a concern then a garden picket fence is an inexpensive alternative, particularly if you build the fence yourself.

Bamboo Fences

A bamboo garden fence is very pretty, fairly inexpensive and solid. They will deter many pests from your garden, however they will need more maintenance than metal, wire or plastic fences. A protective varnish should be applied to keep the bamboo from fading and cracking.
